Brookside Estate was established in 1968 by the Stadler family, well known in the area for starting Shadow Valley Golf Course.  Ben and Betty Stadler, along with the help of their children, designed, constructed and completed the 9,000 + sq ft home in 1974.  The home was designed after a chalet in Colorado that Ben had visited.  Another home just north of this home was started by Ben and Betty’s son and is still “under construction”.  Their son remains committed to completing the project.  It’s a beautiful design and will likely be just as majestic as this home.  The Brookside Estate home design significantly resembles the clubhouse at Shadow Valley Golf Course.

Materials used to construct Brookside estate were found locally.  The marble in the home is from the Idaho Capitol building.  The wood used in the lower level is from the original Barber Dam.  Rocks used throughout the home and outside were gathered by the Stadler family on weekend outings to the surrounding area and northern Utah and placed individually to construct walls, floors and outside decor.  Ben had his own gunite business and constructed the frame of the home out of steel, concrete and a thick layer of insulation.

When the family lived here, there was an in-ground pool and waterfall inside.  The waterfall remains and the pool is able to be used again.  It was filled in with sand and a small layer of concrete by a previous owner.  The home also now features living quarters that can be separated from or opened to the home that includes a spacious master bedroom and bath, kitchen, dining and living/office area with access to the laundry room and a beautiful wrap-around deck with a view of the Boise mountains.  This added 1,000 square feet to the home.

Brookside Estate features geothermal water from the springs in this area.  This water is pumped into the home and is used to heat the floors and living areas and also cools the home in the summer.  The water then leaves the home at approximately 86 degrees and enters the upper pond which has a variety of large Koi, smaller goldfish, frogs and stunning and rare water lilies.  This water then travels into a lower moat and back over to the golf course.  An additional pond at the top of the hill has been constructed for use in the spring and summer as pressurized irrigation for the tropical garden, vegetable garden and lawn areas recently added to the property.

The 3,000 square foot greenhouse was originally the Butterfly Exhibit at the Portland, Oregon Zoo.  It was moved to the property in 2008 and set up to winter the multiple varieties of tropical plants used in the walking garden, a winter vegetable garden and also houses Red-eared Slider turtles.  A gravity fed watering system is installed along with several ponds and a small stream to maintain humidity and warmth in the winter.

In the 1980’s the Stadler’s sold the home to Spring Creek Winery who made several significant improvements.  The winery built the beautiful bridge over the upper pond which includes under-bridge lighting for a spectacular effect at night, built the 65-space parking lot at the entrance to the property, the 4,000 square foot deck to the north, the gazebo and all the stained-glass overlay windows in the lower level.  They also added the wrought iron gating and light fixture in the sitting area in the lower level, the full-sized exquisite oak bar and brass foot rail and the spacious public restrooms on the main level. The winery successfully promoted wine tastings and events at the property but never completed the full winery operation.  The hillside to the east is perfect for terracing and growing grapes.

For the last few years, the property has been used for outdoor music concerts, weddings, receptions and private parties.  An outdoor movie theatre was also constructed for summer movies, which was well-received and popular for families.  The property has also become a favorite for local photographers for photo shoots.  The landscape, the tropical flora and fauna and the wildlife – deer, elk, hummingbirds, pheasants, quail, hawks, eagles, falcons, ducks, geese, herons, turkeys, lizards, frogs – provide for incredible viewing opportunities and photos.
